This was supposed to replace an older Yamaha RX-A2020 Aventage which I loved but the Center, Front Right and Surround Right channels started to go out and only worked sporadically so I grabbed this to replace the Yammy which I had in our Living Room which is our secondary HT system, secondary because it doesn't get used that often as that room shares a common wall with our neighbor and the bass from my sub tends to be bothersome on their side of the wall so I'll only fire it up when I know the neighbor is away.
Because of the features this thing has like being THX Select 2 I decided to move it to my main HT room which is where I usually watch movies, game a bit and listen to music and then swapped out the recently purchased Pioneer VSX-LX302 that I got on Black Friday for $399 ($699 MSRP to compare against the Onkyo) to the living room since the Pioneer is technically an inferior AVR with less features but I think I'm going to swap the Pioneer back to main HT room as the Onkyo isn't really blowing me away and the Pioneer seemed to sound better for music and almost as good for HT use.
Don't get me wrong, the Onkyo TX-RZ720 is a capable AVR with a ton of great features and I'm really enjoying THX Cinema mode however I'm just not getting that magical feeling while listening to music, it seems to sound a bit duller and less lifelike than what the Yammy or Pioneer provided. The Onkyo also is lacking a Pure Direct mode which is something I enjoy using for music and both the Yammy and Pioneer have this. The Onkyo does have Direct for 2.0 output but sounds much flatter and duller than Pure Direct on my other AVR's which is essentially passing along the music source with no DSP or EQ modes applied to it.
The Onkyo is also rated at higher power per channel than the Pioneer is however I find myself having to turn the volume up on the Onkyo by 5db to get the same volume level I had with the Pioneer which for the life of me I can't understand considering Onkyo now owns Pioneer and the amps in both units are very similar. The other similarities they share basically the same exact remote, same GUI, the room correction seems the same even though they're labeled MCACC for the Pioneer and AccuEQ for the Onkyo, same remote app (Onkyo Controller) for the iPhone controls both units, the frame on both units seems to be the same right down the connections being in the same place on the back with only the front panel being a bit different to distinguish the brands.
I do really like the THX DSP modes on the Onkyo and the unit works really well for Home Theater use, I think for HT it has a slight edge to the Pioneer but not by a landslide.
All in all, it's a capable AVR which I still plan to keep but re-purpose to a different room and if you can find it on sale for under $550 it's a decent buy as compared to other models and brands in that price range and has more features than most anything out there under $600 (especially having THX Select 2) but for over $600 I'd recommend to look elsewhere as I think it falls short at the $799-$999 bracket.
I will NEVER purchase another Onkyo product...I have now been burned too many times by their HDMI issues and it has gotten too expensive to continue to be loyal to their products. If your system requires reliable HDMI connectivity, I strongly suggest that you look elsewhere. Onkyo still doesn't have it right.
